Words Starting With

Prefixes unlock whole families of words. Type one letter or the first few letters of the word you are hunting, and this finder lists every English word that begins that way.

How to find words starting with your letters

  1. Type the starting letter or letters into the box — a single letter works, and so does a longer prefix like "un" or "pre".
  2. Optionally pick a word length to match your crossword or puzzle slot.
  3. Press "Find words" and scan the alphabetical list.

Starting letters are powerful clues because English loves its prefixes. Knowing a word begins with RE-, UN-, DIS- or OVER- tells you a lot about its meaning before you see a single result. Writers use this tool too: if you need a punchier word for a headline or a poem and you know how it should start, browsing the family of words with that opening often surfaces the perfect one.

Combine a starting clue with fixed positions and exclusions and the list shrinks fast — our guide How to Use a Word Finder shows the full method with a worked example.

Frequently asked questions

Can I search with just one letter?

Yes. One letter returns every word beginning with it — that can be thousands, so adding a length or a second letter makes the list much friendlier.

Is this the same as a prefix dictionary?

It covers the same ground in a simpler way: any starting letters you type are treated as the beginning of the word, whether or not they form a classic prefix.

Can I combine this with a known ending?

Use the length filter here first, note the candidates, then check them in the Words Ending With tool. Between the two you can pin down most crossword answers.
