5-Letter Word Finder

Stuck on a five-letter puzzle? Put the letters you are sure about into the boxes, add any letters the answer must contain, ban the ones it cannot have, and this finder shows you every 5-letter English word that still fits.

How to use the 5-letter word finder

  1. Tap a box and type a letter only where you know its exact position — for example, if the word starts with S, put S in the first box and leave the rest empty.
  2. In "Must include" type letters the word definitely contains somewhere, even if you do not know where they go.
  3. In "Must NOT contain" type letters you have already ruled out, so they disappear from the results.
  4. Press "Find words". Tap any word in the list to copy it.

That is all there is to it — no sign-up and nothing to download. If you get no results, one of your clues is probably wrong, so remove the least certain letter and try again. If you get hundreds of results, add another known letter or exclude a few more letters to shrink the list. This tool is popular with players of daily five-letter guessing games, but it works just as well for crosswords, codewords and anagram-style puzzles where the answer happens to be five letters long.

Frequently asked questions

Is this 5-letter word finder free?

Yes, completely. You can run as many searches as you like without an account. The site is supported by advertising, which keeps the tools free for everyone.

Does it work for Wordle-style games?

Yes. Green letters go in the position boxes, yellow letters go in "Must include", and grey letters go in "Must NOT contain". The results are the words that match all three clues at once.

Where does the word list come from?

From SCOWL, a long-running open spell-checker word list project released under a permissive licence. It covers standard American English, including a few uncommon words you may meet in hard puzzles.

Why is a word I expected missing?

The list focuses on standard dictionary words, so brand names, abbreviations and very new slang may not appear. If a letter clue was entered by mistake, that can also hide the word you wanted.
